Burkhart Center Schedules Events for Autism Awareness Month
By: Kristin Thomas
April has been designated as National Autism Awareness month. The Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research has planned several events to increase autism awareness.
Stephanie Sokoloski, an employee at the Burkhart Center, said that Thursday, April 10 will be “fly your kite for autism day.” Participants will meet at Urbanowski Park on the Texas Tech campus and fly kites during the morning.
April 13, the Burkhart Center is sponsoring the Hands for Hope Autism Walk. The walk will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Coronado High School track. According to a Tech press release, all profits made from the entry fee will be used toward the construction of a house and residential village for adults with autism.
April 14 through 18 will be Raiders for Autism during which the Burkhart Center will pass out red and black M&Ms in the education building. The M&Ms will be used as a tool to encourage Texas Tech faculty and staff to educate themselves on autism and the effects it has on the families of those diagnosed with autism.
The Burkhart Center will conclude Autism Awareness month with a luncheon on April 21. The luncheon will honor participants of the autism program and their parents.
