Community Standouts RaidersRock

            While America is flooded with stories of crazy college antics and spring break hijinks, seldom are the students who give back to their community similarly recognized. In an attempt to right this, the spring 2008 semester was the first semester for the Raiders who Rock awards. These are given to students who improve their community and university behind the scenes. Out of three groups receiving the award, two students were recognized for their social work in and through a Lubbock hospice center.

Human Behavior in the Social Environment

            For Brittany Cleere, taking one of the required courses for her major wasn’t just another step towards graduation, it was a better understanding of life.
            The 19-year-old social work major from Waco, Texas, said that as part of a human behavior course, she had to participate in a service learning project where she interviewed a patient under hospice care. (read more)

 

 

2008 Raiders Who Rock Award Recipients

            Very rarely are college students and elderly people able to strike a common chord in life. Even rarer is being able to form lasting, mutual relationships between the groups.
            Two Texas Tech students, Miranda Woodruff and Shay Raygada, were recognized with the first annual Raiders Who Rock award for their ability to break down this age barrier while volunteering at the VistaCare Hospice center. (read more)

 

 

Community Involvement and Service Learning

          Texas Tech University students who want to leave a positive imprint on the Lubbock community may be interested in the school’s Service Learning Program.
           The SLP is a program offered to Tech faculty through the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center that focuses on student growth and learning by moving outside of the classroom and working with the community. (read more)
