Arbor Day
by Brittany White
This was a tradition that began in the 1930s and fell by the wayside until Debbie Montford, wife of Chancellor John T. Montford, revitalized the event in 1999. In 1938, the lack of trees on the campus caused president Bradford Knapp to proclaim that one day each spring would be dedicated to planting trees.
The first Arbor Day at Texas Tech University was March 2, 1938, where students, faculty, and university orgainzations planted 20,000 trees and shurbs around campus. For about 10 years, Arbor Day celebration continued until the univeristy was able to fund a maintence program. The celebration of Arbor Day eventually faded. The new event is held on the last Friday in April and celebrates the end of the school year.
