The Masked Rider
by Brittany White

The Masked Rider

This tradition began as a joke in the mid 30s. George Tate shocked football fans when he and a trusty palomino names Tony or Silver, led the football team onto the field then quickly fled the scene.

The Red Raider and his trusty horse appeared every once in a while until 1954, when Joe Kirk Fulton was asked by Tech's football coach to travel to the Gator Bowl. Tech was the only school lacking a mascot, by creating one increased Tech's admission into the confrence.

I n 1954 the Masked Rider became an official tech tradition. It is still the most thrilling part of a football game to see the Masked Rider astride a black steed tear across the emerald turf of the gridiron.
