Broadway Bars
“Its location is convenient, I’d rather walk than have to drive anywhere. I haven’t heard of any new bars opening up, I tend to go to places I am familiar with and I know people will be,” said Tech student, Brad Amy.
With many students like Amy attracted to the convenience of the Broadway area, restaraunts and bars have to perform a balancing act between keeping students happy and abiding by the law. Many of the regulations to opening a Lubbock bar are; according to Sergeant Michael G. Lockhart of the Lubbock Police Department, bars in
Lubbock must pass a series of regulations before they are awarded a permit to serve alcohol. They must pay at least 100 dollars for a restaurant permit and then provide a clean accommodating working environment. Once a bar is opened the establishment is still subject to random sting operations performed by TABC, visits from the Lubbock Fire Marshall, and routine police visits at the end of the night. These visits are used to check for public intoxication of customers and to make sure no alcohol is being sold after two in the morning. The bars are given three chances to pass these routine inspections and if they do not pass they will be forced to close down their business.
