Texas Tech Student Disability Services
For 30,000 students at Texas Tech, student life is fairly simple; they go to class, take notes and look at things on the internet. For about 20 Tech students, doing everyday classroom activities such as taking notes is a daunting task.
These students are visually impaired. Dawn Valles, a senior counselor at the Center for Students with Disabilities, said seven of these students are completely blind. But just because of this disability, don’t count these students out in the classroom.
“They can use their adaptive equipment in the classroom,” Valles said. One form of adaptive equipment is a machine that reads regular text and prints out new pages in Braille, she said. Braille can also be typed and printed out with this machine.
