Class rhythm

JOUR 4350 is primarily a news production class. While we do have some assigned readings, and some sessions that have a lecture component, most of what we do in class is specifically aimed at producing news products. So what does this mean in terms of class attendance? First, attendance is not formally taken. However, your participation in class is measured in several ways.

Mondays

On alternating Mondays we have News Budget meetings and package analysis meetings. This is the most important scheduled time that we have, and a significant part of your participation grade is based on what you contribute to these Monday sessions. Pop quizzes on current events and government leaders may occur on Monday or Wednesday.

Wednesdays

Wednesday "lecture" time (10-10:50 a.m.) is devoted to discussion of readings that we have and further news analysis. For you to get the most out of this class, you should plan to be here. Pop quizzes on current events and government leaders may occur on Monday or Wednesday.

Wednesday labs are your guaranteed time for working on news packages. We have no structured labs as such, but you are guaranteed access to the facilities on Wednesdays. News packages are due every other Wednesday. The instructor will be present for the great majority of Wednesday time.

Fridays

Friday class time is used by appointment only. The operations leadership team may meet at this time, and individuals meet by appointment with the instructor during this time. With the exception of midterm exams, there are no regularly scheduled classwide meetings on Fridays.

Every day

Facilities of News Central (MC Lab 05) are available to our class at all times except those times when the broadcast journalism class (JOUR 3314) or the advanced reporting class (JOUR 4370) is meeting. JOUR 3314 lecture time is 11-11:50 MWF, and their lab is 1-3:50 p.m. JOUR 4370 lab meets Tuesday afternoon. Monday. You may let yourself into the lab and work at any time convenient to you, except those times JOUR 3314 is meeting.
